September 2020 Newsletter

By Jonathan Goodwin, 17th January 2023

Dear Tenants

We are now at that time of year where the day length is beginning to shorten and  many plot holders spend less time at the allotment. Together with  the very sunny weather currently we have had a dry year overall but  there are plenty of jobs that can be done during the autumn. Covering your plot with suitable ground cover really helps to reduce weeds. Dig up any potatoes that are still in the ground and harvest the last of the crops and make a compost heap with any plants that are not diseased.

You can plant garlic now and Japanese onions as well as broad beans suitable for overwintering.

The Trading Store

We are next open on September 19th and after that on October 10th and 31st  which is the morning of our Pumpkin display. Due to COVID -19 current restrictions we will simply display any pumpkins and suggest that only up to  6 people come over to look at them at a time. They will not be weighed and measured this year.

We will then only be open one more time this year on  November 14th. It is really helpful if you can pre order your requirements so we can get your goods ready and thus avoid a queue. Email pennyfox1@googlemail.com or brian.stamp44@ntlworld.com

The potato order for next year has gone in and we will be issuing order forms and opening an online form by email soon. Strictly first come first served. We are not selling garlic or winter onions. Please observe current COVID -19 guidelines when visiting the trading store. We will publish next year’s dates of our opening times soon.

Meetings / Events

Currently due to restrictions we are unable to meet as a committee or working party. I hope that we will be able to hold our AGM in January 2021. No plot judging has been possible and other events like the Hospice Fete  and Summer Show were cancelled.

We did supply the Hospice with a range of produce for the kitchens from some sites  including lovely jams and vegetables from  the Young family on Musgrove.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible but please take note of any local restrictions or council advice over the next months as the situation can change rapidly. I hope you all stay well and continue to enjoy the benefits of allotment gardening.

Best Wishes
Penny Winston
